Patsy Rae Dawson has won over 25 writing awards, many of them first place. Two articles from her second book: God's People Make the Best Lovers were judged by Elsa Russell, a retired Reader's Digest associate editor. For "Why God's People Make the Best Lovers," Russell wrote:
Splendid work extolling the joys of sex in Christian marriage. And even through Patsy Rae Dawson proves her points though meticulous research in the oldest source of all--the Bible--the conclusions reached totally support our modern concept of the sexual equality of the sexes. This is such an unusual approach to a popular topic, it's an uplifting piece of work."Then for "Victims of Victorian Morals," Russell said:I must confess I've never thought about this before, but now, you've got me wondering...I realize this [these questions] would all need a book. The book is here: Marriage: A Taste of Heaven, Vol. II: God's People Make the Best Lovers.
Patsy's dad said, "As a child, when everyone else was laughing at a story I told, Patsy would ask, 'Is that the truth?'" She has continued to ask that question throughout her life.
Her journey of studying, teaching, and writing on marriage began when an abusive husband asked, “If a husband tells his wife to eat beans every day, don't you think she should?” Knowing that only a Bible answer would stop him from using her to browbeat his wife, Patsy discovered the power of the scriptures to transform marriages.
She has taught marriage classes and worked with both men and women since 1970. Her extensive biblical and secular research for the Marriage: A Taste of Heaven series makes it the most comprehensive material available with discussion of over 400 scriptures in each volume. One student wrote:
Patsy's materials are such a radical divergence from everything else on the market. Imagine going straight to God's word for help and healing in your marriage….what a novel idea!!!!Vol. I: God's People Appreciate Marriage was revised and expanded in 1995. The most common remark readers make is, "I'm falling in love all over again!" Vol. II: God's People Make the Best Lovers was revised and expanded in 1996 and deals with the increasing problem of sexual addiction among Christians. Churches all across the country and in many foreign countries use Patsy's marriage classes for both men and women.
Oscar Miles, who works extensively with couples and teenagers, said in an Amazon review:
These two volumes are the best books on marriage that I have read, and I have read many. I have bought and given away many copies, used them to teach and counsel. Vol. 1 is great for pre-marital counseling, to strengthen marriages, and to help save even very desperate marriages. Mrs. Dawson goes through many, many Bible texts dealing with the subject of marriage, deals with them thoroughly, and makes great applications with anecdotes, illustrations, and current events. Her chapters on the Song of Solomon alone make the book invaluable.Patsy expanded on her Song of Solomon research when her own daughter was a teenager. The Song of Solomon: God's Sex Education for Teenagers, Courting Couples, and the Already Married~~ages 11 to 99~~ is available in audio formats. Congregations often use it in young people's classes and retreats.
One teenage boy, after listening to the Song of Solomon on a car trip with his mother, asked to keep the tapes in his room. Later, he called Patsy and asked for the documentation on the class on "Safe Sex: What They Don't Tell You," based on the sex-education classes in Seattle. He used that information to write a research report for English. His teacher asked, "Where did you learn these things?" and the tapes were shared with her. As a result of his interest, the class was put in essay form to make the references readily available and is also now a single CD to appeal to young people. When this young man married, he and his bride designed their wedding ceremony around the Song of Solomon.
Later, when couples started coming to her for help with sexual addiction, Patsy realized that the husbands sounded just like King Solomon in their attitudes toward women. She used the experience gained from working with those families to write "Adultery and Sexual Addiction: A Plan for Healing the Soul and the Marriage" and to explain the connection on her Song of Solomon FAQ page. Men from all over the world e-mail that her booklet is the first time they've felt love and hope. They use the Song of Solomon to correct attitudes from their youth that have denied them God's blessing of married lovemaking.
After publishing Vol. II: God's People Make the Best Lovers, Patsy began receiving requests for help with severe problems that didn't respond to the usual classes on marriage. Through surveys and looking back on her experience as a teacher, she found that every time a marriage hadn't responded, some type of sin was being covered up in the home. Her resulting study and going through training at two women's shelters, including the second largest one in the US in Tacoma, WA, led to teaching, then publishing an audio album of classes titled Challenges in Marriage. The album shows how when sin is covered up in the home, it inhibits love and eventually destroys the marriage. It gives procedures for overcoming all kinds of sin.
Learning the principles in the classes on "How to Fight Fair and Face Anger" has transformed many marriages. Even just one person in the marriage learning how to fight fair can completely change the usual course of disagreements. One wife wrote:
Your material on fighting fair has really opened my eyes. My husband used to punch my buttons with ease. Now I remain calm, and he's confused about why he can't bully his way through to winning an argument. He has given me the silent treatment for weeks at a time and called me vile names when he was speaking. But I have continued to practice my "mirror lines."Update about 6 months later: There has not been any verbal abuse in this house since I've learned how to fight fair and stayed with it until my husband also learned to fight fair.
The "Fighting Fair" techniques are available as a single CD of just that class.
Patsy and her husband Sam have been married since 1964. They worked with congregations in Washington, Texas, and California for over 22 years. They have a daughter and lost a son in 2003.
Patsy was raised in the Texas panhandle and met her husband Sam while her dad was a Studebaker Dealer. Afterwards, her parents farmed for over forty years. She and Sam retired early and returned to Texas in 2001. They both continue to study and grow as they write and teach. This stage of life is offering greater teaching opportunities than they ever had during the 22 years Sam preached as they build on the foundation of those years of experience and Bible study to see where God will take them.
